Quetrupillán Volcano Ascent Tour
Quetrupillán, meaning “roaring active spirit” in mapudungún, has its name from the evident explosion that gave shape to the volcano we see today. With 2360 masl., a stunning glacier sits inside the crater.
This volcano is a great option for the ones who want to get away from the multitudes and enjoy pristine natural environments. It is located in between Villarrica Volcano and Lanin Volcano, offering magnificent views of both.
A day in Nature
We start early off in our agency in Pucón, taking Camino Internacional, in direction to Palguín Alto. After about an hour, we reach the trailhead.
We start off in a very marked trail, as we head deep into coihue and lenga forest, gaining altitude slowly. Here we may see some inhabitants of the forest such as the Magellanic Woodpecker, or the Andean Fox.

After a couple hours, the end of the forest is reached at the 1500 masl. mark. A drastical change in the landscape occurs, changing from dense forest to bare volcanic rock. From here, we can see Quetrupillan’s summit in the distance, which is still about 2 to 3 hours away.
The further up we go, we loose track of a trail, the terrain becomes more sandy and loose, and the slope becomes steeper, up to 30º. In winter, we will find ice and snow, using technical equipment to progress safely.

The summit is our reward
From the summit, we can see 7 other volcanoes around us. Inside the crater, the ice rests timeless. Mystical forests surround the mountain.
The descent is done through the same route and takes about 3 to 4 hours.
In summary, Quetrupillan Volcano is a must for adventurers looking to find something different and beautiful away from the crowds.
